SEE VIDEO to appreciate these beautiful STERLING SILVER Japanese salt and pepper shakers. This vintage salt and pepper shaker set is a rare find made of sterling silver from Japan in the 1920s. The design features a Japanese Shinto Shrine Gate style and has a beautiful patina that has developed over 100 years. The set comes with its original box and has not been polished to preserve its unique character.

The shaker set measures 2.5 inches in height and width. It is made of 950-grade sterling silver and is in excellent condition. This item is perfect for collectors or those who appreciate unique vintage pieces. The Japanese gate is called a Torii Gate, see more details below.

I have listed three different Japanese STERLING SILVER 1920's salt and pepper shakers that are in their original box. They are the Geta sandles, sail boats and the Shinto Shrine Gates. Feel free to go check those our -- especially if you are a collector.

These have not been polished as most of my customers wants the 100 years of patina on the silver -- once it is taken off, it takes another 100 years to get its beauty back. A little history on the TORII GATE: it is a traditional Japanese gate most commonly found at the entrance of or within a SHINTO SHRINE, where it symbolically marks the transition from the mundane to the sacred and spot where kami are welcomed and thought to travel through. The presence of a TORII at the entrance is usually the simplest way to identify Shinto shrines, and a small TOREE. Icon represents them on Japanese road maps.

The first appearance of TORII GATES in japan can be reliably pinpointed to at least the mid-Heian period --- the year 922. This is a pre-owned item and I take great care to accurately describe the item but please see the pictures for full details. While we do our best to list every item in detail, these are vintage and pre-owned items and some flaws are to be expected.
